A Visit from Bishop Whayne!

Grace Episcopal Church of Ludington joyfully welcomed Bishop Whayne Hougland, Jr. to his first visit in Ludington, Michigan and his first celebration of Holy Eucharist with us this past Sunday. What a breath of fresh air he is, and what a delight to all in attendance! We already look forward to seeing him again in about 18 months.

Silent Night, Holy Night

Christmas Eve at Grace Church was a blessed, joyous and very fragrant opportunity for worship this year. Father Mick celebrated his first Christmas Eucharist with the family of Grace, he gave us a thought-provoking and touching sermon, and we enjoyed all the music of the Holy Night, including harp music, to present reverence and love to the Holy Family. Ah, the gift of Frankincense to perfume the air! Thanks to everyone who worked so hard to bring warmth and light to the service, amid the chill and ice of the night.

Welcome to Father Domingo Shriver and family!

We are beyond excited, thankful and joyous about welcoming our new priest, Father Domingo F. (“Mic”) Shriver, his wife Paula, and children Marcelina, Ashley, Rachel, Joshua, Maya, Sarah and Kayleigh! They will arrive from Hopewell Junction, NY at the end of November, and Father Mic will celebrate his first Eucharist with us on December 8, at 11:30am.

267329_1991714585783_1988969_nWe will share Father Mic with Emanuel Lutheran Church of Ludington, as we are in Joint Communion with Emanuel and have jointly searched for a priest/pastor who could serve both congregations. Father Mic is a gregarious, warm, approachable and down-to-earth minister who quickly connects with people at a human and heart level. He and his wife love children and love to interact with the congregation and the wider community. They are a wonderful answer to our prayers and spirit-guided search.

Welcome and blessings to you and your family, Father Mic!

Grace welcomes Corey and Diana into the family of God!

Our parish and Eucharist was doubly blessed this past Sunday, as Corey James Ottgen and his baby daughter Diana Irene were baptized by Pastor Chris Anderson.

Mom Heather, Dad Corey and baby Diana await the start of the service.

Mom Heather, Dad Corey and baby Diana await the start of the service.

It has been quite a long time since Grace Episcopal Church of Ludington hosted a baptism, and longer still since we experienced a double baptism. Congregants were ecstatic to be present for the big event and to hear the voice of a baby in Church!

1103131137Dad Corey came first in line, receiving the traditional Holy Water on his head.

1103131139Baby Diana was next, receiving Holy Water, and then both candidates received Holy Chrism on their foreheads. No Crying from either Corey or Diana!

We thank the Ottgens for joining Grace’s family of faith and welcome Corey, Heather, daughters Kate and Diana, and son Luke with open arms!

Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works.       Amen.

The meaning and majesty of the Feast of Christ the King

Christ the King Sunday is celebrated on the last Sunday of Ordinary time (last Sunday after Pentecost), before the beginning of Advent that starts the new Church Year. As the last Sunday of the Christian Church Year, Christ the King Sunday is the climax and conclusion of the Church’s liturgical journey through the life of Christ and the Gospel message.

Its purpose is to celebrate the coming reign of Christ as King of the Earth and his completion of the renewed creation that marks the fullness of the Kingdom of God. That hope is born from the entire life of Christ and his teachings that have been celebrated in the seasons of the Church Year during the past twelve months. In celebrating the Reign of Christ the King, this Sunday also provides an appropriate bridge to the new Church Year that begins the following Sunday (on the first Sunday of Advent), with an emphasis on hope and expectation, the longing for the coming of the Kingdom of God amid the darkness of a sinful world.*

The following pictures show the majestic vestments worn during Grace Episcopal Church’s celebration of Christ the King, and the magnificent icon displayed on the altar. Father Tom Guback, our beloved celebrant, brought this icon with him for the worship service. Fr. Tom was raised in the Russian Orthodox faith and has a special relationship with religious icons. How beautiful is the portrait of Christ! Alleluia!
